SIZING IS RELATIVE

  • Elizaveta Bennett

A year or two back I saw this TikTok, where a Japanese creator was very excited to buy clothes in the US because her size was much smaller there. The same woman with the same body felt differently about her body in two different countries. At home she was size L, in the US - XS. Once again - the same woman in the same body.

The clothing industry (as well as the ready-pattern industry) wants to put us in the boxes. And these boxes differ from country to country. But they are still boxes. We compare ourselves to each other, we try to fit into the smaller size as if it makes us smaller. It doesn't. Nobody knows what size you're wearing, nobody cares. It is all in your head.

My bottom part is somewhere in the area of UK size 12-14, I could force myself into size 10. I won't look size 10. I will look size 12-14 squeezed into a garment obviously too small for me. Why would I do that? I wouldn't feel comfortable, quite the opposite.

Use Your Own Measurements

I don't operate in these limiting sizing systems. I work with my unique measurements, my body shape and my personal style. I design clothes purposefully slightly oversized for more comfort. And you know the trick?

Volume in the right places creates a much more slimmer look!

My clothing doesn't have sizing attached to it. I choose the fit and work with my measurements. There's no label on it.

I remember the first time I made a custom top & skirt based on my measurements. I burst into happy tears: turned out, nothing was wrong with my body. The fit was perfect, even though it was the very first test and I hadn't worn anything remotely well-fitted ever before in my life.

Your body is your only perfect template. If you want to feel good in your clothes, stop buying those ready-sewing patterns that are not meant to fit you. Learn to design your own based on your unique shape.

This reflection beautifully highlights how clothing sizes are arbitrary constructs that vary across borders, often distorting our self-image. It's a powerful reminder that our worth and comfort aren't defined by the size on a label, but by how we feel in our own skin. Embracing our bodies as they are, without succumbing to arbitrary sizing standards, is the true path to self-acceptance and confidence.
