CAN YOU MAKE PANTIES?

If you have never made your own underwear, you might scratching your head: but where do I even begin?! What fabric do I need? How much? Do I need a special sewing machine to sew underwear? What thread should I use for sewing knickers? Let's break it all down and make the process less daunting :)

What fabric to choose for knickers

If you know us, you know the answer: 100% natural fibres are always the best for everything. More specifically, for a pair of knickers you'll be looking for stretchy (knit) fabrics, we recommend 100% organic cotton jersey. It is not only natural (and good for your female health), it is also quite easy to work with as it doesn't stretch too much. In terms of weight, you are looking for t-shirt like fabric, about 130-160 GSM.

You will also need elastic. If you opt for hidden elastic - any general use is fine. I you want a stitched on top elastic - look for picot elastic, it has a pretty lacey edge.

How much fabric do I need to make a pair of knickers?

First things first. If you have never made a pair, you will need to make tests: 5-10 or more samples to get to that perfect fit. Your old t-shirts are great fabrics for tests. And when it comes to making an actual pair: it depends on your size. Once you have a pattern done, you can measure the length of each detail (from waistline to the crotch) and the width. I am somewhere around UK 12-14 and 60cm cut of fabric (150cm long) is enough for three pairs for me.

What machine do I need to sew underwear?

You most basic domestic sewing machine IS ENOUGH :) The only program it needs to have is zig-zag stitching (when you sew stretchy fabrics with your usual machine, straight stitches will break while zigzag stitches will allow for the stretch). If you have an overlocker (serger), great! It come in handy for side seams, but it is not necessary.

The important part is the right needle. Stretch needle (not ball point, it is specifically called stretch needle) is the best choice. Size wise anywhere from 70-90, depending of the thickness of your fabric (rule of thumb: the thicker the fabric, the thicker the needle).

What thread should I use for sewing underwear?

Any general purpose thread you already have at home. Honestly, don't overcomplicate it :)
