CAN YOU LEARN PATTERN DRAFTING?

One of the biggest misconceptions about clothes making is that pattern design is complicated and you need some specially trained people to create sewing patterns for you to follow. The truth is: every single pattern follows the same principles, there's no magic. Every single garment, every detail has already been done, nothing in fashion design is new. Every single sewing pattern is a specific combination of "constructor parts", nothing more.

Let's say, you want to make a shirt. Excellent, let's break it down into constructor parts.

1. Bodice

Bodice is the base of the shirt, what fit would you like? Tighter or looser? Yes, with pattern drafting you can decide on the fit from the very beginning. Next - where do you want your darts? Do you want darts at all? You are in charge - once you learn how darts help to shape the garment, you'll know how to move them around or turn into princess line darts. Button stand - do you want in the front or back? Middle or to the side? Maybe curved? Would you like to hide buttons under the pleat or maybe insert a ruffle along it? Do you want a yoke on the back? Maybe on the front?

2. Collar

Which collar would you like? Classic shirt collar, straight-band collar or Peter Pan collar? Is it pointy or curvy? Do you want a collar at all or maybe you'd like a tie instead?

3. Sleeves

What sleeves would you like to design for your shirt? Long or short? Maybe 3/4? Classic or puffy? Maybe super dramatic bishop sleeves? What about the cuffs? Wider or narrower? Longer or shorter?

And that's it! Pattern drafting is easier than you think.
