WHAT IS PATTERN DRAFTING?

You know, no matter how many times we say "We don't do ready sewing patterns, we teach pattern drafting", there's always (at least) one person who doesn't understand what it means. The idea, that the only way to "sew clothes" is to use a "ready sewing pattern" is so ingrained in society that when you offer something else, people look at you with a very confused face.

"But what about the pattern? Don't you need patterns for sewing?"

You do need patterns for making clothes.

But.

You don't need ready patterns for making clothes.

You can design a pattern

Sewing patterns are not designed by magical pixies in a magical pattern-designing place. People design them. YOU can design them. And that is all pattern drafting is.

But if ready sewing patterns are based on standard measurements of an imaginary woman, pattern drafting is about taking your measurements AND your body shape AND your posture into consideration and making a pattern that fits you.

How to design the clothes you want to wear

It might sound scary and overwhelming if you've never done this before. How would you know where to position a dart? How big should it be? It all comes clear when you follow a well-designed learning system. No line is random, no curve is there "just cause". Your body and your measurements dictate the shape of the pattern.

When you sew clothes, following the ready pattern, you just copy a design onto fabric and stitch it.

When you design a pattern, you actually design a garment and decide how you would like it to fit you. Yes, fit can also be included into the pattern. Would you like it tighter or looser? What sleeves would you like? Do you want this or that collar?

Pattern drafting is not only about taking control over sizing (as if clothes that always fit isn't good enough a reason huh?).

Pattern drafting is about design choices

Pattern drafting is also about making design decisions. You don't have to "almost like" the garment. You can design a garment you'll LOVE to wear. And it will fit you too.

You don't need to compromise on pockets positioning, you can place them anywhere you want.

Pattern drafting is about 100% freedom in creating clothes, becoming your own stylist & fashion designer, taking 100% control over your wardrobe and feeling great in the clothes you wear.
